Emerging from the shadows

An Awakening

in light

Pushing past the false selves

A fledgling

reborn,  tonight.

Layer upon layer of untruths

Melt from my skin

like ice

Puddles of darkness surround me

Evaporating

into the night.

The stars slowly descend

To encircle

my inner being

A dance of light and love

An ethereal Celebration

of Seeing

Softly as a feather
You brush against my cheek
Quietly as a whisper
You speak to me in my sleep

As gently as a lover
You caress my skin
As profoundly as a song
I hear your voice within

Notes so clear
A touch so real
A dream in flight
Oh, so near

Fluttering … Flittering …
Your gossamer wings
Right before my eyes -
My impossible dream

Only five years old
Emily hold tightly to her doll
She’s trapped in an unknown world
So sweet, so innocent, and so small


Night is nearly upon them
As she sits shivering with cold & fear
Lying in her mother’s arms
Wondering, tonight, what danger is near


She finds it hard to fall asleep
Lying beneath the cruel night sky
As they hide in their secret corner
Hoping to be left alone by those who pass them by


Emily is much too young to understand
She cries for home, her room, her things
But mom tells her, “It’s okay honey,
We have each other, our hopes, & our dreams”


In a state between wakefulness & sleep
Mom holds Emily close
Desperation fills her heart
Knowing there’s nowhere else to go


Morning finally arrives
They’ve made it through another night
Emily awakens to her mother’s tears
And tells her,
“Don’t cry momma, you’ll see, we’ll be all right”


Days and weeks pass by
And each night is much the same
But as the nights grow colder
So does the illness and pain


Mom no longer seems to move so well
So in their hidden corner they stay
Even the search for food -
No longer happens everyday


As another morning finally arrives
Emily awakes at her mother’s side
But today, Emily is too young to understand
Why mom won’t even open her eyes


Emily,
only five years old
so sweet, so innocent …
Left all alone


Emily,
Only one story of many
in our failing economy

I open up the page

The first glimpse of who I am to be –

She lives in a fairy-tale castle

In a world of knights and gallantry

She dreams of her one true love

Whom her dad, the king, despises

The battle is fought and won -

Their love forever immortalized

The story is over

It’s the end of one life

Now time to move on

To overcome a new strife

In these pages

I can live many times

Within these stories

I commit my secret crime

I am a thief

Taking of these lives

Because it’s the only way

For my soul to survive

When the story unfolds

I am no longer me

My heart then will not feel

My own pain and misery

It’s an addiction like no other

One never before heard of or told

It’s my own secret sin -

An addiction that cannot be controlled!

This blog, A Wave Will Rise on Quiet Waters is my heart and my passion in poetry and verse.

I have created this second blog, Calming Reflections to reflect my thoughts and mind. I frequently tend to think and analyze many things about my own life and our world, and truly enjoy discussion about many different topics. This is what I hope this new blog will be: a place for reflection, thought, and discussion.

I invite you to join me there as I begin my journey and I hope you enjoy your stay.

Within the consuming darkness
The smallest spark of light still shines
A glimmer of possibility & chance-
The hope for a miracle survives.

The chance is smaller than a grain of sand
Among our world’s broad areas of open land
Less, even so, than capturing snow
And matching the flakes within my hand

Yes,
Even less …

Than a single drop of water
In the oceans so massive and deep
Or an isolated solitary star
In our universe’s vast infinity

Yet I know It is His hand who holds
All of these boundless things
And in His love and mercy
My miracle can surely grow wings

My hope will not be diminished
As long as the spark remains
Shining in the darkness –
A glowing symbol of faith.

My world is quiet
As the darkness settles in
And the snow begins to fall
As the winter of my soul begins

I held on to the light
For as long as hope would allow
But its flame has dimmed
And only the emptiness remains now

I see the world spin by
As if in a snow-filled haze
Shadows & shapes, they pass-
Only figures of blacks & greys

The shadows, they reach out for me
As I push each of them away
I embrace the solitude
But, alas, its loneliness aches

Dreams,
buried beneath the snow
Acceptance,
of a life I’ll never know
Simply Existing,
In the Winterland of my Soul.

She began her journey

Many years ago

She’s climbed several mountains

And swam upon many shores

She’s gone through forest filled trails

Getting lost at times in the mess

But still pushing on, searching for

That mountaintop called success

There are so many others

That she meets along the way

Each undertaking their own journey

All looking for their rightful place

Many turn to the Mt. Everest of life

And follow the steep path of Fortune and Fame

She sees the lucky ones climb to the pinnacle

The others falling, left broken and lame

She observes the ones who simply crawl

Rolling along Emptiness’ downhill road

They awaken, work, and sleep

Grudgingly carrying their load

She sees the signpost in the distance

Labeled ‘Happiness and Peace’

But unlike Fortune & Fame and Emptiness

There simply isn’t a path to be seen

This incredible mountain

Reaches high into the sky

Its height insurmountable

Its length thousands of miles wide

It’s beauty surpasses all it surrounds

Casting shadows even over Fortune & Fame

Reaching it is surely impossible

No, she’ll never find the way

It has taken her many years

To simply reach this place

She surrenders to her weariness

And simply sits, in disgrace

She’ll never find the strength

Or the knowledge to continue on

She stares up at the sign post

Believing her chances already gone

But in that moment –

A small detail catches her eye

An arrow on the signpost

And — hope come back to life!

Then, confusion fills her mind

As she sees the arrow pointing down

“The mountain is thousands of miles high,”

She cries,

“Why? Oh why, is it pointing down?”

And in that brief moment

Her heart and soul are set free

She knows what the arrow means

And in its wisdom, she can hardly believe!

The landscape begins to change

As she closes her eyes

happiness & peace begin to fill her

To her utter wonder and surprise

Her soul shines brightly

As she begins to understand

The awesome and amazing secret

Of this bold and beautiful land

“There is not a path,” she says

To the mountaintop of Happiness & Peace

Because I AM the mountain

And the land of beauty is within me!”

Drowning in this sea of emptiness

Always reaching for a hand to grasp

Forever finding only loneliness

As she watches the world run past

Never understanding why she’s just out of view

The multitudes, they walk right through

It’s as though she doesn’t even exist

Only a shadow, hidden in the mist

But this shadow is very real

And it’s true anguish that she now feels

Because although the crowds on each side surround

There truly isn’t a safe haven to be found

She continues her journey, trudging along the way

Hoping against hope, that they’ll see her someday

And when this day comes, she’ll no longer be alone

The shadow, born anew, finally finding a form.

She’s the eternal optimist

Always happy and carefree

Always wearing a smile on her face

Each time you meet her on the street

She shares positive thoughts

And advice when you’ve lost your way

Her friendship is always present

And can be counted on day by day

She’s calming and strong

And there when you’re in need

With words of strength and wisdom

To help you in your quest to succeed

But don’t judge by appearance

Because the surface can deceive

There’s so much more behind that smile

Than you can even begin to conceive

Behind the words of wisdom

And beneath the sound advice

Lies a soul amidst her own journey

Hiding in her optimistic disguise

She doesn’t have all the answers

Although at times that’s how it seems

Just like you, she’s searching and learning

And reaching for her dreams

There are times when even she

Must pass through fields of shadow and doubt

She is still traveling the path

And learning what life is all about

The eternal optimist

Doesn’t always wear a smile on her face

There are times when even she cries

And needs your loving embrace
